{"id":6509,"date":"2013-11-30T09:00:19","date_gmt":"2013-11-30T17:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.freeway.com\/?p=6509"},"modified":"2021-01-04T16:56:28","modified_gmt":"2021-01-04T16:56:28","slug":"ab-60-undocumented-immigrants-drivers-license-measure-finally-approved","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.freeway.com\/blog\/ab60-california\/ab60-bill\/ab-60-undocumented-immigrants-drivers-license-measure-finally-approved\/","title":{"rendered":"Undocumented Immigrants\u2019 Driver\u2019s License Measure Finally Approved in California"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Assembly Bill 60, also known as AB 60, the New Driver\u2019s License for California residents who do not have proof of legal U.S. immigration status, is on its way to becoming law \u2013 much to the relief of some two million unlicensed and uninsured drivers in California.<\/p>\n<p>On September 12, 2013, the California State Senate approved Measure AB 60, which will allow all eligible drivers in California who cannot prove their legal immigration status to apply for a special driver\u2019s license. The new bill, which takes effect on January 1, 2015, makes California the 11<sup>th<\/sup> state to approve driver\u2019s licenses for undocumented immigrants.<\/p>\n<p><b>A Law That\u2019s Good For Everyone in California<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Why it\u2019s great news for all licensed California drivers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Offering drivers\u2019 licenses to undocumented immigrants makes the streets safer by giving drivers\u2019 training to people who would otherwise be driving on the streets without adequate education. Unlicensed drivers are five times more likely to get into a fatal crash than licensed drivers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Proper insurance is crucial in ensuring safe streets for all drivers. Allowing undocumented immigrants to obtain drivers\u2019 licenses enables them to gain driver\u2019s insurance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Why it\u2019s great news for undocumented immigrants:<\/p>\n<p>The new driver\u2019s license will provide peace of mind to undocumented immigrants and their families.\u00a0 The new licenses:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Provide proof that they are complying with driving laws.<\/li>\n<li>Cut down on abuse by making it harder for towns and cities to confiscate vehicles in the case of a routine traffic stop or an accident, so they can keep their car.<\/li>\n<li>Decrease the cost of car insurance, because they will be able to show that they have a clean driving record. (Insurance companies provide up to a 20% discount to drivers with a clean record).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What are the requirements to get the license?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pass written, vision and driving tests<\/li>\n<li>Provide a valid and current form of identification, such as an unexpired passport from the country of origin, or a valid, unexpired consular identification &#8211; <i>matr\u00edcula consular<\/i> of their country of origin),<\/li>\n<li>Proof of California residency (such as utility bills, property titles and lease or rental agreements).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What will the driver\u2019s license look like?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Uses the initials \u201cDP\u201d (Driver\u2019s Privilege) instead of \u201cDL\u201d (Driver\u2019s License) in the license.<\/li>\n<li>Adds a notice that says: &#8220;This card is not acceptable for official federal purposes. This license is issued only as a license to drive a motor vehicle. It does not establish eligibility for employment, voter registration, or public benefits.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Will I have to pay additional fees in order to obtain this license?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>From January 1, 2015, to June 30, 2017, immigrants who apply to obtain a driver\u2019s license may need to pay an additional fee to offset the cost of issuing these new licenses. The costs will be determined by the <a href=\"http:\/\/dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/home\/dmv.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">California Department of Motor Vehicles.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Are you concerned about obtaining a license or confused about AB 60?
