What if the biggest danger to your car was its fuel economy?
As drivers, we try to protect our vehicles with the best car insurance. However, some cars have a fuel economy so bad that you end up worrying more about the price at the pump than your insurance premium.
If you want real fuel efficiency in your vehicles, you need to know which ones to avoid. To help you save money, we put together this guide to the worst gas guzzlers on the road! Keep in mind that many of these vehicles demand premium gas and, even if they don’t specifically state that in the manual, you may get confusing advice on what kind of gas to use.
Cadillac CTS Wagon
The spacious size of the CTS Wagon makes it look like a great choice for driving around with your kids. However, driving this beast also means paying the “gas-guzzler tax” on a frequent basis.
That’s because this car only gets 18 mpg on the highway. When driving in the city, that drops to 12 mpg. This means frequent visits to your local gas station, and with gas prices being what they are, your wallet will soon regret these trips.
Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport
We can’t deny that the Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport is a very beautiful car. It’s a sporty little two-seater that, at first glance, looks like a great choice for riding the open road.
Of course, the “open road” is a lot less fun when you are constantly having to stop for gas. Out on the highway, this car gets 13 mpg, which is already pretty bad. When driving in the city, though, that mpg plummets to 8 mpg. With so little fuel efficiency, we can see why the government passed the Energy Tax Act back in 1978 to help focus consumers on energy conservation!
Chevy Corvette
For many years, Corvette has been a name that is synonymous with speed and performance. However, the 2012 model year Corvette is synonymous with something else: poor gas mileage.
On the highway, you can count on the Chevy Corvette to get 26 miles to the gallon. However, the effective mpg drops to 16 once you’re driving in the city. While you can squeeze an extra mile of conservancy with manual transmission rather than automatic transmission, gas-conscious drivers should avoid this car and maybe grab a used car with better mpg. It’s just as bad for climate change as it is for your bank account.
Lamborghini Aventador
What does the Lamborghini Aventador (both coupe and roadster) have in common with the Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport? Both cars are sporty, and both are two-seaters. Oh, and one more thing: Both of them get terrible mileage.
Like the Bugatti above, both versions of the Lamborghini Aventador have low mpg no matter where you drive. On the highway, the Lamborghini does have a slightly better mpg of 15. Driving in the city, though, the mpg for the coupe and the roadster drops to 8 and 9, respectively. If you want to avoid buying a gas guzzler, definitely skip out on this one.
Ford Mustang Shelby GT500
Even if you’re not into car culture, you probably have heard of the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500. These cars are fast, fun, and relatively affordable. Unfortunately, that affordability goes out the window once you have to start buying gas.
For all this car’s speed and style, it only gets 23 miles per gallon on the highway and 15 miles per gallon in the city. The car may look very pretty, but it has the kind of low fuel consumption that will soon have you wishing you’d bought a different car.
Rolls-Royce Dawn
If they are being honest, most people associate the Rolls-Royce name with wealth. The stereotype is that if someone drives a car like the Rolls-Royce Dawn, they probably have money to spare. And with fuel efficiency this bad, that better be the case!
The Rolls-Royce Dawn clocks in at 18 mpg on the highway and 12 miles per gallon in the city. If you think you can just switch models and avoid the drain, unfortunately, changing models won’t help you much. On average, the Rolls-Royce Wraith, Ghost, Phantom, and Cullinan are just as bad!
Dodge Charger
Those who step behind the wheel of a Dodge Charger enjoy driving a flashy muscle car around town. This car has been a popular choice for many young soldiers who enlist in the Army. However, when we saw how bad the Charger’s gas usage was, we could only hope Uncle Sam pays well!
On the highway, the Charger gets 23 mpg. In the city, the mpg drops down to 14. While the Charger may be a throwback to yesterday’s muscle cars, does anybody want a throwback to the poor gas economy of the 1960s?
Bentley Continental GT and convertible
The Bentley Continental GT is a heavy, powerful, and reliable vehicle. You can get it with or without the droptop. Unfortunately, this car is a real gas guzzler, regardless of which version you buy.
On the highway, this 5,000-pound car normally gets 20 mpg. If you get the convertible version, that drops down to 19 miles per gallon. Both versions only get 12 mpg when driving in the city. Unless you want to make a lot of payments to the gas station, along with your monthly car payment, we’d recommend against buying this model.
